Single case design: evaluating our own clinical outcomes

The workshop on “Single case design: evaluating our own clinical outcomes” will be held on the 27th of August and will be conducted by one of the keynote speakers for ICAP 2017, Prof.Graham Turpin. He was a fellow of the British Psychological Society and an academician of the Academy of Social Sciences also former Head of Department, Department of Psychology, University of Sheffield. His general research strategy has been to apply methods of experimental psychology to the understanding and treatment of psychological disorders, and in particular basic process underlying attention and emotion. He also is the author of over one hundred and fifty refereed scientific publications in journals, proceedings and books. He has been involved in local, national and international research projects in the area of Clinical Psychophysiology and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder. Topics that will be covered during the workshop

  • The application of single case methods to evaluating clinical outcomes in routine clinical practice will be reviewed.
  • Although both qualitative and quantitative approaches will be considered, the workshop will focus mainly on quantitative methods.
  • Rationales for adopting single case methods will be outlined. Examples of the use of different designs in clinical practice will be presented.
  • Different stages in the implementation of single case design will be outlined: design, data collection, graphical presentation, statistical analysis, critical interpretation and implications for practice.
  • Practical examples of implementing single case designs will be shared. Participants will be encouraged to bring examples of their own clinical practice that they would wish to evaluate.

Mental Health recovery: Separating the personal and clinical aspects

The workshop on “Mental Health recovery: Separating the personal and clinical aspects” will be held on the 27th of August 2017 and will be conducted by Prof. Jerome Carson. Prof. Jerome is a Professor of Psychology at the University of Bolton in England. He was awarded his Doctor of Philosophy from King’s College, London, for a thesis entitled, “The Stress Process in Mental Health Workers: Assessment and Intervention Studies.” He has co-edited three books on mental health recovery, “Psychosis: Stories of Recovery and Hope,” “Mental Health Recovery Heroes Past and Present,” and “From Communism to Schizophrenia and Beyond: One Man’s Long March to Recovery.” In addition to his interest in mental health recovery, Professor Jerome researches in the areas of Positive Psychology, wellbeing, happiness and occupational stress. This work has been featured internationally and has been reported by Time Online. He has published over 200 journal papers and book chapters.

Topics that will be covered during the workshop

  • The concept of recovery from mental health problems and how to implement it in clinical practice.
  • Clinical recovery, personal recovery including stages of recovery; as well as assessing recovery.
  • Recovery in practice including the bottom-up approach, the “Recovery Group”, recovery workshops as well as the use of drama to teach recovery.
  • Resources needed to move towards recovery based services as well as the problems with the recovery approach.
  • Recovery heroes of past and present. Why stories might be important? Who to choose?
  • The promise of Positive Psychology.

Workshop on Positive Psychotherapy for Counselling

The workshop on “Positive Psychotherapy for Counselling” will be held on the 27th of August 2017 of the conference and will be conducted by Mrs. Chathurika Kannangara. Mrs. Chathurika Kannangara is an associate Lecturer and a Doctoral Researcher, researching in the field of positive psychology applications for education at the School of Education and Psychology in the University of Bolton. She is currently conducting a study on the influence of grit, self-control & resilience among undergraduate students. She is also conducting her PhD research on the application of Positive Psychology for students with learning disabilities. Her work has been published in number of international journals and she has won international awards for her research and contributions.

 

The targeted audience of this workshop includes psychiatrists, psychologists, psychotherapists & counselors, social workers & occupational therapists, mental health researchers & enthusiasts as well as psychology students.

  • Explore on the domain of positive psychotherapy for counselling Clinical and Personal recovery.
  • Research evidence and practice based evidence from positive psychotherapy approaches in relation to culture relevance and applicability.
